Breast Case Study: East Midlands

Challenges

With a purpose-built Breast Cancer Centre and a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, the Trust, like many others in the region, began to struggle with 2WW targets and staffing pressures, due to an influx of patients being referred to the clinic for an assessment of Breast Cancer symptoms.

The Trust also had several vacancies within the Radiology Team, subsequently reducing in-week capacity.


Delivery

Your Medical Services became aware of the Trusts struggle, consulted the Breast Clinic team and proposed to run a fully staffed clinic.

By delivering a consultant-led programme with consultant Breast Surgeons and Radiologists, Your Medical Services maximised the use of the Trust’s existing resources to increase support and reduce patient’s pathway with no additional costs.

The Breast Campaign began with a Clinical Team of consultants who helped deliver out of hours one-stop clinics. By doing so, the Trust could increase the number of patients seen each week and start clearing patient backlogs.

As time went on, Your Medical Services began to deliver midweek support within the Trust by providing extra daytime clinics. This helped maintain a consistent flow of patients throughout the Breast Centre.


Results

The results were apparent from day one. By understanding the Trust’s needs, Your Medical Services were able to deliver a flexible service where support is only provided when and where it was needed, without being tied down to a long-term contract.

By supporting the Trust with regular clinics, the Clinical Team have been able to continue to meet 2WW targets, see patients quicker, avoid breaches and continue to deliver outstanding patient care.

Currently, Your Medical Services holds regular service reviews with the Trust and look forward to continuing supporting the Trust.
