International Women's Day: My Story

Happy IWD to all of the ladies out there!

As we know, this is the day we celebrate the recognition of our achievements as strong and independent females. I have faced many challenges as a woman that I can share to help inspire others.

Nine years ago, I made the decision to leave my country, family and friends, seeking what is called ‘’a better future’’. Nowadays, I can definitely say that I am proud of my decision, as in the UK, women are recognized for their achievements without divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political. Most importantly, I was able to prove to myself that everything is achievable as long as you have courage, strength, dedication, and confidence.

Unfortunately, what I have had to overcome as a woman is more than I could have expected. The worst moments of my life have been due to serious female health issues, which resulted in me having seven surgeries in the last 15 years and a very rare syndrome called Bertolotti.

Bertolotti syndrome is a congenital disorder leading to back pain associated with a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV). It most frequently occurs via an articulation of the L5 vertebra transverse process with the sacrum, leading to irregular spinal mobility and pain.[1]

This affects 7–20% of the population but is most prominent in females. The result is that you get to see how mentally strong you can be and learn who will be there to support you on your journey. You are often left to wonder:

‘’How much more can I bear as a woman knowing there is still more to come?”

I have never thought to share this, but this is my experience, and I cannot change it.

Therefore, my message to all women out there is:

Don’t give up, be strong, and most of all, be grateful for what you already have, as you don’t know what tomorrow might bring you. ✌️
